Continuing the jailbreak theme today comes news that jailbreak supremo MuscleNerd has claimed that Geohot might release a new untethered jailbreak in the coming weeks.



The news comes after another iPhone developer and hacker Pod2G informed the world that a new vulnerability has been discovered for iOS and that GreenPois0n is being actively worked on as it is clear that Apple has blocked GreenPois0n in its upcoming version of iOS – version 4.3.

Reading MuscleNerd’s comments it appears we could be getting at least one new untethered jailbreak for at least some devices sooner rather than later.

As our illustrious leader @TaimurAsad points out, the date of February 10th is no coincidence – that’s when the Verizon iPhone finally lands in stores. New owners looking for a jailbreak on day 1 could be in luck!

Of course this is still unconfirmed by Geohot himself, so fingers crossed. Hopefully he can pull himself away from all that Sony drama going on in the PlayStation jailbreak scene to help us out in iLand!

Apple Hints iPhone 5 Coming To Verizon In July


As Verizon’s systems get crushed with customers eager to buy an iPhone 4, Apple has hinted that the iPhone 5 will be coming to the carrier in July.

Everyone knows that Apple will be refreshing the iPhone hardware this summer. But the big question about today’s Verizon launch is whether that carrier will get new hardware in less than six months. It seems likely. Apple is strongly rumored to be working on a dual-mode handset that works on both GSM and CDMA networks. But where does that leave VZW’s early adopters? How are they going to feel about buying a device made obsolete in a few months?

The New York Times columnist David Pogue asked Apple these questions. Here’s what Apple said:

Apple won’t say if there will be an iPhone 5 for Verizon this summer. (“Let’s put it this way: We’re not stupid,” is all an Apple rep would say.) But if it does, and you buy an iPhone 4 now, you’ll be stuck with an outdated phone in only five months.

To me, this reads like a tacit admission that the iPhone 5 will launch on Verizon and AT&T simultaneously this summer. Obviously Apple won’t pre-announce the iPhone 5 on VZW because no one that network will buy the iPhone 4 today.

As Apple says, “We’re not stupid.”

GreenPois0n RC5 for Windows Will Be Available In a Day or Two

iPhone developer and hacker Joshua Hill of the Chronic Dev Team has confirmed that the Windows version of GreenPois0n will be released by the end of this weekend, which effectively means in a day or two most.

Apple Working on Cheaper & Smaller iPhone to Sell Off-Contract

Based on a report by Bloomberg, Apple is working on releasing smaller and cheaper version of iPhone 4 which will be sold for a dirt-cheap price of $200 off contract. Even though, the price of the smaller, cheaper iPhone is going to be same as iPhone 4, but without the obligatory 2 years contract, which is what makes it a lot cheaper.

The new version will be about 1/3rd smaller than the original iPhone, told a reporter to bloomberg who has seen the prototype. According to the report by bloomberg, this new version of iPhone will also allow multiple wireless networks which means dual support to use GSM and CDMA networks.

Since it’s a lot cheaper and only a little smaller, it is expected that the new version will be without retina-display and will have a smaller screen. If this model of iPhone 4 comes out, it will be released around mid this year. However, I don’t understand how could Apple possibly be planning iPad 2, iPhone 5, iPad 3 and a smaller iPhone 4 around the same time?

Bloomberg further wrote

Apple often works on products that don’t get released.

Which means it is highly likely that the product may not come out even if it’s being considered to be manufactured.

iOS 5 To Introduce Revamped Notification System for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

Sources close to CultofMac has informed them that Apple is buying a small company to revamp the much criticized notification system of iOS.

Apple is working on a new notification system for iOS and will be buying a small company to build its technology into the operating system, according to one of our sources.

It is no secret that Android’s, WP7’s and webOS’ notification system offers far better experience than iOS’ current notification system, which is intrusive at best.

Apple’s pop-up notification system for new text messages, voicemails and the like has often been criticized as one of the weakest parts of the iOS. Notifications are intrusive, modal and often cryptic. It’s a mess.

Hopefully, we will see a complete revamp of notification system when Apple rolls out iOS 5 with iPhone 5 this summer.

Apple Working On 3 New iPhone 5 Prototypes, 1 With Slide-Out Physical Keyboard

We tend to take rumors from Taiwanese blogs with a pinch of salt here at Redmond Pie, but this one caught our eye courtesy of AppleInsider. The report, from tw.apple.pro claims that Apple is currently working on not one, not two, but three iPhone 5 prototypes. What’s more, it’s rumored that one of these handsets possesses a slide-out hardware keyboard.

Unfortunately, the original report has been run through a very rough translation, but another point raised is the existence of one prototype closely resembling the current iPhone 4 model. This would be akin to the iPhone 3G/3GS update where the exterior remains identical but the innards receive a slight upgrade with improved battery life, faster CPU and more RAM.

The reason this particular rumor caught our eye is thus: tw.apple.pro are the people that got their hands on an iPhone 4′s screen long before its announcement, along with a battery from the aforementioned handset. Granted, a good track record doesn’t automatically make these claims true, but it’s a start.

iPhone 5 to Feature 4-inch Display, A5 Processor

A new report from Digitimes claims that the next-generation iPhone 5 will feature a 4-inch display to take on Android-powered phones head-to-head as the battle for the supremacy in the next-gen smartphones heats up. They have received this piece of info directly from the component suppliers.

The component suppliers noted that the production lines for Apple’s next generation iPhone have begun testing, and Apple is interesting in expanding the screen size to 4-inches to support the tablet PC market as the vendor only has a 9.7-inch iPad in the market.

Another report from the same source claims that iPhone 5 will sport a faster A5 processor (Dual-Core perhaps?) to take on the likes of recently announced Samsung Galaxy S II, while the iPad 2 will feature an enhanced version of the current A4 chip.

Apple is reportedly looking to outsource the production of its A4 processor as well as the next-generation ARM Cortex-A9-based A5 processor to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), according to industry sources.

According to Digitimes Research, the iPad 2 will support an enhanced version of the A4 and the A5 will power the iPhone 5. TSMC will initially produce the improved A4, and could likely become the exclusive manufacturer of the A5.

Apple to Preview iOS 5 for iPhone, iPad, iPod touch on March 2nd – Report

According to sources close to Engadget, Apple is going to show off an early preview version of iOS 5 at the iPad 2 media event, which is going to be held on Wednesday, March 2nd, at the famous Yerba Buena Center for the Arts in San Francisco.

It’s also almost guaranteed that we’ll see the next version of iOS (number 5 in all likelihood, along with its SDK for devs), and an expansion of Apple’s cloud services (that part is a little… foggy right now). Of course, that will perfectly set up Apple’s announcement of the iPhone 5 in June, which is when iPad owners can likely expect to be using the new software. Regardless, we’ll have the goods come next week, so stay tuned!

While there has been no word on new features in iOS 5 yet, a revamped notification system is said to be in works, and will be introduced with iOS 5.

iPhone 5 Leaked Parts Shows 4-inch Display, Thinner Bezel

Two weeks ago, we published a report about some of the details of iPhone 5 leaked straight from the component suppliers of iPhone. According to the report, iPhone 5 will feature a 4 inch display. Later in that week, we presented you with a mockup of iPhone with a 4 inch display in same encasement. Quite honestly, that was one of the ugliest products Apple may ever produce and that is what led to the debate if Apple will be using the same encasement or larger.

A Chinese reseller of Apple’s parts has recently published an image of the digitizer panel of what it appears to be 5th generation iPhone’s. The part looks similar to that of iPhone 4 but with a larger cut for display to support 4 inch screen. If the leak is authentic, this may mean Apple is looking forward to fit the screen in the same encasement and your iPhones are probably going to look like this (I am not going to buy one if it does).

Reports also suggest that Apple has invested about $4B in some technological development which we are speculating to be in display technology to feature a larger screen on same encasement by getting the display to the edge of the phone. My only wish is they make it look lesser ugly than it does in the mock up.

Apple COO Tim Cook Drops Hints At Less Expensive iPhone for Emerging Markets

During an interview with Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi, Apple’s Chief Operating Officer Tim Cook hinted at a new, cheaper iPhone on the horizon, writes Business Insider.

During the interview, Cook said that Apple isn’t ‘ceding any market’ and that he doesn’t want Apple to be a brand ‘just for the rich’.

Mentioning Apple’s recent push in China, Cook admitted that the existing market is a ‘classic prepaid market’ while not ruling out the possibility Apple will seek to go head-to-head with its competitors.

Business Insider believes Cooks words point to a new, less expensive iPhone in the company’s future, which would tie in with reports that a new iPhone Nano could be on the cards.

In the past, Apple’s budget option has been the outgoing iPhone models – the iPhone 3GS is currently available for less than $50 from AT&T. Does Apple need to introduce a new handset for a market that it already caters for?

Supposed iPhone 5 Part Leaks, Apple Working On A Slider with Physical Keyboard?

Another supposed iPhone 5 part has appeared on a Chinese website and the blog is claiming that Apple’s next iPhone could actually feature a sliding keyboard.

According to AppleInsider, tw.apple.pro posted a photo of what appears to be a 30-pin dock connector cable from an unreleased iPhone, with the part number 821-1300-02 HF/c1.

The Chinese site also goes on to claim that the recent rumors and indeed leaked parts of an iPhone sporting a 4-inch screen are in fact fake, while opening the possibility of an iPhone with a sliding screen – could Apple really be getting ready to offer a hardware keyboard?

This isn’t the first time tw.apple.pro has claimed an iPhone could get a sliding keyboard. Two weeks ago the same site said that Apple was working on a device that resembles the current iPhone 4, but with a new appendage. As we have mentioned in the past, this particular Chinese blog has had success in the past – they got their hands on the iPhone 4′s screen before Apple announced it.

While tw.apple.pro’s past success can’t be ignored, we at Redmond Pie still aren’t convinced Apple is going to go back on four years of keyboard-less hardware, especially when CEO Steve Jobs is on a personal mission to rid all Apple products of buttons entirely!

iOS 5 to Bring Android-Like Gesture-based Lockscreen to iPhone, iPad and iPod touch?

Apple is working on a new gesture based lockscreen, which will work similarly to the dots screen pattern found on Android devices.

Currently, iOS users have to slide-in and enter a password (if enabled) in order to unlock the lockscreen on device. But if these screenshots, courtesy of 9to5Mac are anything to go by, Apple might introduce (possibly with iOS 5) this new gesture based lockscreen, where you will have to connect 9 dots in some custom specified way to unlock your phone.

Currently, this new lockscreen is said to be in use internally at Apple by employees for testing.

iOS 4.3 Baseband 04.10.01 Vulnerable for iPhone 4 Unlock, Confirms Dev Team

Good news for iPhone 4 unlockers as we have yet another update, this time from none other than the man who actually works on the Ultrasn0w, MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev Team!

This latest tweet of MuscleNerd confirms baseband commands in iOS 4.3 Beta 3, baseband 04.10.01 which are vulnerable. The team is currently hard at work on trying to invoke them to unlock iPhone 4 on iOS 4.3.

Current i4 unlock goal includes til 04.10.01 (4.3b3). Very weird situation…vuln cmds are there, trying to invoke them!

esterday, the iPhone Baseband hacker Sherif Hashim provided an update of sorts, on the upcoming Ultrasn0w unlock for iPhone 4. According to him, the baseband crash which he found is confirmed to be working on both the new basebands, that is: 3.10.01 and 2.10.04.

Apple is expected to release iOS 4.3 to public on Wednesday, March 2, at the iPad 2G event. Though don’t expect the Ultrasn0w update to drop right after iOS 4.3 is public. iPhone Dev Team will require at least a couple of weeks for all the standard testing on the final iOS 4.3 code before releasing the updated Ultrasn0w unlock to public.

Update on iPhone 4 Unlock on Baseband 3.10.01 and 2.10.04

Its been a while since we last heard or read anything on the upcoming iPhone 4 unlock for 3.10.01 and 2.10.04 basebands. MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev-Team has already confirmed that unlock for iPhone 4 on newer basebands wont be released until Apple drops iOS 4.3 to public.

Now that iOS 4.3 is expected to drop soon, The iPhone Baseband hacker Sherif Hashim has provided an update of sorts, on the upcoming Ultrasn0w unlock for iPhone 4. According to him, the baseband crash which he has found is confirmed to be working on both the new basebands, that is: 3.10.01 and 2.10.04.

Don’t expect the unlock to drop right after iOS 4.3 is public. iPhone Dev Team will require at least a week or two for all the standard testing on the final iOS 4.3 code before releasing the updated Ultrasn0w unlock to public.

Also, in November last year, The iPhone Dev-Team released an Ultrasn0w update which enabled iPhone 3G and 3GS users to unlock their devices on iOS 4.2.1 by permanently (for now) upgrading it to iPad’s baseband 06.15.00. Rumor has it that there is soon going to be a way for iPhone 3G and 3GS users to downgrade the baseband back to the original 05.15.04 which ships with iOS 4.2.1 for these older devices.

MobileNotifier – How iOS 5 Notifications SHOULD Work [Jailbreak Tweak]

With iOS 5.0 expected to be previewed at Wednesday’s Apple event in San Francisco, iOS users the world over will be hoping that the much-maligned notification system will get a long overdue overhaul. With the current modal system being what many would consider the operating system’s main weak-point, fans and pundits alike can agree something needs to change. If Apple is looking at altering its notification system it need look no further than Peter Hajas’ MobileNotifier, now in its 3rd beta.

MobileNotifier is an open-source alternative to Apple’s current notification system for those willing to jailbreak their device. Aiming to make notifications more useful, developer Peter Hajas has set about completely rewriting how iOS handles incoming SMS, push notifications and anything else that would normally appear in the dreaded notification bubble.

Hajas told us in an email:

MobileNotifier is an open source reimplementation of the iOS notification system, designed to be unobtrusive, user-friendly, and a joy to use. A new release was announced earlier today, bringing the software to a significantly more usable state. It’s accessible on Cydia via the repo phajas.xen.prgmr.com/repo, and it really feels like the way iPhone notifications should have been done by Apple in the first place.

Perhaps the most interesting feature of MobileNotifier is one Hajas calls the AlertDashboard. Accessed by bringing up the iOS multitasking tray, AlertDashboard lists your pending notifications and allows you to either dismiss them, or take action on them. The theory here is that no notification gets left behind, fixing our main issue with the way iOS currently handles alerts. Right now, receiving multiple notifications can cause confusion, with some older, unread messages going astray. AlertDashboard stops this from happening.

Needless to say, we at Redmond Pie are pleased as punch that Peter has put MobileNotifier together. Even if jailbreaking isn’t your particular cup of tea, developers like Peter creating apps of this caliber can only be a good thing. Hopefully Apple is watching – afte-rall, it wouldn’t be the first time the boys from Cupertino have taken a leaf out of the jailbreak book.

Share Photos on Facebook and Twitter Right From iPhone’s Native Photos / Camera Roll App [Jailbreak Tweak]

One of the things that I love about Android and Windows Phone 7 is ability to share photos and videos to my favorite social networking sites, natively from the Gallery/Pictures/Photos app natively, without having to open any other third party app.

By default, the native Camera Roll / Photos app on the iPhone and iPod touch only allows sharing of pictures via Email and MMS.

But now thanks to this new jailbreak tweak found by BlogsDNA, you can now integrate Facebook and Twitter sharing options right into the native Photos / Camera Roll app on the iPhone and iPod touch.

Dubbed as iSocialShare, this tweak adds a “Cloud” button when you are viewing a photo from the native Photos / Camera Roll app. Tapping on this button brings one-click sharing options for Facebook and Twitter.

You will, of course, need to have a jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch to install it.
