Confirmed ! Redsn0w Untethered Jailbreak (Backup Plan) for iOS 4.2.1 Will Be Released On Christmas !
Since Comex’s untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 has been delayed, MuscleNerd of iPhone Dev-Team has announced that they are going to release their “backup plan” for untethered iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak over the Christmas weekend. However before they do a general release, they are looking for testers to try out this latest version of Redsn0w. The requirements for testing Redsn0w for iOS 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak are as follows:
Over the Christmas weekend we’ll be releasing a version of redsn0w that implements the “backup plan” to the 4.2.1 untethered jailbreak. We’re seeking your help to test this redsn0w and find any bugs before we do a general release!
(If you have an iPhone 3G, or an old-bootrom ipt2g or iPhone 3GS, you already have an untethered jailbreak! Just use the latest public redsn0w.)
To keep things manageable, this will be a Mac-only test program. We also request that any volunteers *NOT* need the ultrasn0w unlock (in case things go very wrong).
Right now, the “backup plan” requires that you have the 4.2b3 IPSW on your Mac, and that Cydia has your 4.2b3 SHSH hashes. Please don’t pirate that 4.2b3 IPSW! (We’re also working on a way that this technique might apply to all those with 4.1 IPSWs, but that’s not the first goal right now.)
If you fit all the above qualifications, please follow @redsn0w_testers on twitter for announcements, and use the comments section here for feedback. Thanks very much for your help, and Happy Holidays!

iPhone 5 and iPad 2 to Feature a Dual-Core CPU?
An analyst at Rodman & Renshaw claims that the upcoming Apple iPad 2 will feature a dual-core CPU to compete with the likes of RIM PlayBook, and the Android “Honeycomb” based Motorola Tablet.
The analyst said:
If this happens, it will be the first iOS product from the Cupertino-based company to sport a dual-core chip. And since both the current iPad and iPhone 4 shares same A4 CPU, it will be a no brainer for Apple to include the same chip in iPhone 5 that they are going to use in iPad 2.Apple is on track to refresh the iPad by March and iPhone by late summer. A key component upgrade across these platforms will be a dual-core processor featuring a pair of 1GHz ARM Cortex A9 cores.
The analyst also told CNET something about the Verizon iPhone:
iPhone volumes could also be maintained at the 15 million/quarter level through next year. The launch at Verizon could support an incremental 8 million units.

Geohot’s Next Jailbreak for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad To Be Called Rubyra1n?
We have just been tipped off about the possible name for the next jailbreak by Geohot, called Rubyra1n. The domain Rubyra1n.com was registered by the iPhone hacker named George Hotz (aka geohot) on 27th March 2010.
Interestingly, whois records for both blackra1n and rubyra1n shares same record while whois record for limera1n is different. Geohot might have changed it after the discovery of limera1n.com domain (before its release) back in April 2010. Whois records also reveals that both limera1n.com and rubyra1n.com were registered on the same day, that is March 27th 2010 which makes it even more authentic. Though there is no confirmation about this by Geohot himself. Oh and yes, Geohot is not on Twitter. If you have been following someone on Twitter with word “geohot” in its alias, than it is most likely a fake profile and I suggest you un-follow all such profiles now.

Apple’s iPhone 4 Antennagate Is Biggest Technology Fail Of The Year 2010 – CNN Report
CNN has listed out their “The 10 biggest tech fails of 2010” in which they have picked Apple’s iPhone 4 “antennagate” as tech’s biggest fail of the year 2010.
This is what CNN had to say about the now infamous “antennagate” scandal from the Cupertino-based company:
Other notable mentions in that list were: 3D TVs (at #2), Microsoft KIN (at #3), Google Nexus One (at #4), and iTunes Ping (at #10).Apple drama — nothing brings out the diehard fans and Cupertino haters quite like this one.
The newest iteration of the wildly popular smartphone was released in June.
By all standards, it’s been a huge success. All standards except one.
Some people couldn’t actually use it for phone calls.
OK, maybe that’s an overstatement. But the Grip of Death (caused when users covered part of the antenna in a band around the phone’s edge) was real — and a big glitch in the device’s rollout.
First Apple said the problem didn’t exist. Then they said it was a software issue. Then they kind-of admitted it existed and gave away free cases to help. Then, they said it doesn’t really exist anymore and stopped giving away the bumpers.
Months later, the problem is all but forgotten and the phones show no sign of dipping in popularity. So "fail," in this case, is a pretty relative term.
CNN’s 10 Biggest Tech Fail of 2010:
1. iPhone 4 ‘Antennagate’
2. 3D TV
3. Microsoft KIN
4. Google Nexus One
5. Facebook privacy
6. Google Buzz
7. Gawker media sites hacked
8. Content farms
9. Digg relaunch
10. iTunes Ping

Comex’s Untethered Jailbreak Is Going To Be Released After Apple Releases iOS 4.3 Firmware?
Yes you read that right ! An Italian site contacted Comex of Spirit and JailbreakMe fame to ask him about whether or not he is going to release his untethered jailbreak tool for iOS 4.2.1. Comex’s reply was swift and simple, à la Steve Jobs. He is going to wait for Apple to release the next firmware update to public before releasing his tool.
Comex replied:iOS 4.3 Jailbreak
Just like Steve Job’s ones, I would like to really receive a short and direct answer to my question: your next tool will jailbreak ready for iOS 4.2.1 or the next iOS 4.3?
The email address of Comex as shown in the screenshot above seems authentic as he posted the same address publicly in a reply to a user on his Twitter account.Depends when 4.3 is out.
So as things stand now, the only way to get untethered jailbreak for iOS 4.2.1 is to use the latest version of Redsn0w 0.9.7, which requires you to have SHSH blobs of iOS 4.2b3 saved. There is currently no other way to get untethered jailbreak except for Redsn0w. If you don’t have SHSH blobs of iOS 4.2b3 saved, you can use Redsn0w 0.9.6 which can jailbreak (tethered only) all iOS devices on iOS 4.2.1.
Comex untethered jailbreak tool will be released only after Apple releases iOS 4.3 or 4.2.2, whichever they decide to before the major iOS 5.0 release in June this year. [Thanks iDarkman for the hat tip]

GreenPois0n for iOS 4.2.1 Jailbreak Release Seems Imminent
iPhone developer Joshua Hill of the Chronic Dev Team has publicly confirmed that he is going to release an updated version of GreenPois0n with support for iOS 4.2.1 jailbreak as soon as he is done adding sandbox patches.
For those of you who don’t know, GreenPois0n is based on Geohot’s Limera1n bootrom exploit which has already pwned all current iOS devices for life. This release of GreenPois0n though will most likely be a tethered jailbreak, much like what Redsn0w 0.9.6b6 can already achieve.Updated version of greenpois0n coming whenever I finish adding these new sandbox patches, sorry this has taken so long
This so called tethered or semi-tethered jailbreak however only applies to the new devices like: iPhone 3GS (new bootrom), iPhone 4, iPad, iPod touch 2G (MC Model), iPod touch 3G and the iPod touch 4G. Old devices like iPhone 3GS (old bootrom), iPhone 3G and iPod touch 2G (Non-MC Model) can be jailbroken-untethered right now using tools such as Redsn0w 0.9.6b6. For untethered jailbreak, you will have to use Redsn0w 0.9.7 which requires you to have SHSH blobs of iOS 4.2b3 saved.
If you don’t have SHSH blobs of iOS 4.2b3 saved, you will have to wait for Comex’s untethered jailbreak tool which is most likely going to be released after Apple releases the next iOS firmware.

iPad 2 Mockup With Slim Design, Dual Cameras And a Separate Bluetooth Keyboard Spotte
A Mockup for iPad 2 has been spotted at CES inside an iPad 2 case which shows slimmer design and dual cameras, one on the front for FaceTime calls, and one on the back for taking snaps.
Interestingly, the case design also involves a separate Bluetooth keyboard which allows for notebook-style computing.
Folks at Engadget weren’t aware that what they are looking at is possibly the case for Apple’s next generation iPad until they asked if they could slide down their own iPad inside. The exhibitor of the case, Dexim, responded that it wouldn’t fit, since the case was designed for the next iPad.

Well, well, well, what do we have here… According to sources at BGR, Apple is going to drop home button on both the iPad 2 and iPhone 5. You will be controlling your next-gen iPhone or iPad using multi-touch gestures which has been introduced with iOS 4.3 for iPad.
Apple is also said to be bringing popular OS X applications like Photo Booth and iLife apps to iOS around the same time as iPad 2’s launch. We have exclusively been told that the reason Apple just added multitouch gestures for the iPad in the latest iOS 4.3 beta is because the iPad will be losing the home button. Yes, we are told that Apple, at some point in time, will remove the home button from the iPad’s design. Instead of button taps, you will use new multitouch gestures to navigate to the home screen and also to launch the app switcher.
That’s not all, however. In addition to the home button disappearing from the iPad, we’re told that this change will make its way over to the iPhone as well. Our source said Apple employees are already testing iPads and iPhones with no home buttons on the Apple campus, and it’s possible we will see this new change materialize with the next-generation iPad and iPhone devices set to launch this year.
It has been said that Steve Jobs didn’t want any physical buttons on the original iPhone at first, and it looks like he may soon get his wish.
Additionally, we’re told Apple’s popular photo-taking application, Photo Booth, will be appearing on the next iPad. It’s also very possible that we’ll see iLife apps for iOS unveiled around the iPad 2 release as well.
