Will the Next-Gen iPhone 5 be Made of Liquid Metal, à la T-1000 from Terminator 2?


Remember T-1000 Skynet robot which was made from Liquid Metal in Terminator 2? Well it looks like Steve Jobs and Co are in full mood to build their next-gen hardware using Liquidmetal Technologies, a California based company from which they recently acquired exclusive rights to build products made of Liquid Metal alloy.

One of the best and the most distinguishing factors about Apple products is the way they produce their hardware, the build quality, the materials used are of top-notch quality which makes up for the high price-tag and the brand value. Be it the all unibody aluminum build MacBook Pros, iMacs to the all front and back glass built iPhone 4, all these products stand-out when compared to the competitors offering.

quidmetal alloys represent the first enabling materials technology since the creation of thermoplastics and possess characteristics that make them superior in many ways to other commercially-viable materials. First, they have an “amorphous” atomic structure, which is unprecedented for structural metals. Second, they include a multi-component chemical composition, which can be optimized for various properties and processes. Finally, they lend themselves to process technology similar to that possessed by plastics.

Now that Apple has exclusive rights to build products made of Liquid Metal, I don’t think they will be interested in building any robot for the next Terminator movie, but rather they will most likely be using it in the next-gen iMacs, iPads and iPhones to once again stay one step clear ahead in the game.

Apple Granted Design Patents for “Slide to Unlock” and “Keyboard Letter Pop”


If you haven’t been living under a rock or something, you will probably know that it was Apple who first came up with this new innovative way of unlocking phone on a touch-screen with iPhone. The now “Slide to Unlock” screen that you probably see the most on your phone was one of the most “ooh aah” thing of 2007. Same goes for iPhone’s virtual keyboard which had this “letter pop-out” effect which no other phone at that time had.

Since its establishment in 1975, Apple has been applying for, and won numerous patents. This is important because technology moves at a record-breaking pace and there is big need for any major company like Apple to protect its intellectual property rights from being copied, so that it can keep selling its products for the unique features it posses.

It was three years ago when Apple first applied for these patents. And today, Apple has been granted two patents by the United States Patent and Trademark Office titled "Animated graphical user interface for a display screen or portion thereof ". These patent awards, if anything are normally considered technical victories in this fast-paced tech. world.

So what this means now is that if any company tries to copy the exact design, or significantly similar to the one described in the patents, they will have to either license the design from Apple, by obviously paying handsome fees, or face the legal action by Apple’s legal department.

Yes! I have got iMovie, which is an iPhone 4 exclusive app running almost perfectly on my iPhone 3GS. I did this video just to show that iPhone 3GS is fast, and capable enough to run iMovie. It is just that Apple wants us all to purchase the new iPhone 4 by saying that iPhone 3GS’ hardware is not good enough for this stuff.

David Romhan Torres I just make iMovie for iphone 4 run on an iphone 3GS, it’s very simple just download it from iTunes, modify info.plist file and change the Minimum system version to 3.0.0 and front-facing-camera to false

Changing the string for front facing camera to false will make the app run on any jailbroken iPhone and iPod touch as long as it is running iOS 4. Now according to the source above, you can also run it on non-iOS 4 devices i.e. devices running the old 3.1.3 or 3.1.2 firmware by changing the minimum system version string. I tried this step to run iMovie on my iPad but with no success. If any of you manage to get this thing run on any non-iOS 4 device, then please do let me know in the comments section below.

Facebook Launches Location Service Called “Places”

At the Facebook HQ in Palo Alto, CA, Facebook CEO and Founder Mark Zuckerberg, along with other developers, engineers and partners at Facebook announced a new location based product called Facebook Places. This is essentially a check-in service like Foursquare and Gowalla that allows you to check-in to places that you have been to share it with all your Facebook friends and family. You will be able to see which of your friends are currently at the same venue and which of them have been there. There is also going to be an option which will allow you to tag your friends into places you check-in. Of course you can change all that in your privacy settings and by default only those who are friends with you on Facebook will be able to see your check-ins. Facebook is also going to keep a complete history of check-ins that you have made at a dedicated page on web.

Existing location based service players like Foursquare, Gowalla and Yelp have all been announced as partners. What this means is that you will still be able to use these services, but they will now integrate with Facebook Places, allowing you to publish your data to your Facebook wall.

Starting from Tomorrow, Facebook will be rolling out this service worldwide on the web. iPhone users have been given the first priority for the integration of Facebook Places, and so a new update to the existing Facebook for iPhone app will be released later tonight which will have seamless integration with this new feature. Others will have to use it via the touch.facebook.com mobile site.

Facebook for iPhone version 3.2 was rolled out last night which brought support for the newly launched “Places” feature, support for background uploading of pictures and videos in iOS 4, along with other visual enhancements such as “Pull-to-Refresh” to iPhone. However for many users including myself, this new version was mostly broken, throwing “Unable to Load this Page” error on most pages. Oh and if you tried removing and reinstalling the app, it simply refuses to login.

So as it turned out, the problem was occurring for jailbroken iPhone users who had BiteSMS app installed from Cydia. The new Facebook for iPhone 3.2 for whatever reasons is not compatible with the current version of BiteSMS. So if you have this app installed, uninstalling it from Cydia will fix the problem, at least it did for me. or you can alternatively try:

For those having issues using FB after the upgrade, do the following conditions apply?
*Jailbroken
*Have BiteSMS installed
*Have SBSettings installed
I opened SBSettings, More, Mobile Substrate Addons. I then disabled BiteSMSsb, resprung, and now FB works fine. Not sure what that addon does, but so far BiteSMS works fine, as does FB.

White iPhone 4 Unboxed, Hands-on Video!

Here is what appears to be a leaked late production unit of a white iPhone 4 which is officially scheduled to launch “later this year”. 9to5Mac site which got the scoop on it believes that this might be one of those units which have been “scrapped by Apple at the last minute after defects in the white color clarity were found”. White iPhone 4 has been challenging for Apple to manufacture. It has already been delayed twice and there is no exact date on when it will be available. Hopefully, majority of the issues related to “color” and “light leak” are resolved by now so that we can get our hands on it sooner rather than later

Software Update to Fix iPhone 3G Performance Issues is Coming Soon, Confirms Steve Jobs

Apple CEO Steve Jobs has confirmed that a new software update for iOS 4.x will be rolled out soon to fix performance woes on iPhone 3G, running iOS 4.x. He confirmed this in a reply to an email, sent to him by a user who expressed his frustration over the performance of his iPhone 3G on iOS 4, calling it ‘”dog slow”.

I’ve waited patiently through 4.0.1 and 4.0.2, looking for a fix that will make my phone work again. I’ve read the forums that advise me to jailbreak my phone or use some other method so I can downgrade back to a version of iPhone 3, however I’m not prepared to use a method that is not supported by Apple.

While he didn’t give any specific version number or release date for the upcoming software update, it is likely that the software update he is referring to in the email is iOS 4.1 which will be released next month at Apple’s Media event, where the next-gen iPod touch, and rumored iTV (Apple TV) announcements will take center-stage

Jailbreaking may have gone completely legal in the United States but that doesn’t stop Steve Jobs and Co. in their fight against unofficial / unauthorized use of iOS based devices. Apple today has applied for a new patent which will allow the Cupertino based company to remotely disable any iOS based device (iPhone, iPad and iPod touch) against any unauthorized usage which is not supported by the company, such as “jailbreaking” and “unlocking”.

Ars Technica writes:

The patent, titled "Systems and Methods for Identifying Unauthorized Users of an Electronic Device," describes several ways a device could sense who is using an iPhone or iPad. Among the methods considered are voice print analysis, photo analysis, heartbeat analysis (!), hacking attempts, or even "noting particular activities that can indicate suspicious behavior."

The device could automatically snap pictures of the unauthorized user and record the GPS coordinates of the device, as well as log keystrokes, phone calls, or other activity.

Once an unauthorized user is detected, the device can then automatically disable certain features or send notifications to Twitter or other services.

Even though the patent description doesn’t mention jailbreaking specifically (probably because it is legal now?), but as Slashdot notes, jailbreakers might fall into “hacking attempts” clause as mentioned in the patent description. What do you think?

Did you ever felt the need to close all the apps in one go which are running in background on any of your iDevice running iOS 4.x? While multitasking in iOS 4 and above is useful, it may slow down things a bit if too many apps are backgrounded, specially on iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G (Jailbroken with Multitasking enabled) which have half the RAM of iPhone 4. So instead of killing all the apps and processes manually in multitasking tray (aka Task Switcher) to free up the RAM, you can close them all in one tap with “Remove Background” toggle for SBSettings.

This toggle for SBSettings is available on Cydia for free. You will need to have SBSettings already installed from Cydia before you can install this toggle on your jailbroken iPhone or iPod touch. Both SBSettings and Remove Background for SBSettings is available under BigBoss repository.

Animated Live HD Wallpapers on iPhone 4, Running iOS 4.x (video)

One of the things which iPhones and iPod touches are still missing over Android devices is the animated or live wallpapers option which were first introduced with Android 2.1 on Nexus One back in January of this year. But thanks to this new jailbreak app called vWallpaper, you can now have animated wallpapers on any iPhone and iPod touch running iOS 4.x / iOS 3.x. This in my opinion is the single best reason (behind unlock of course) to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch now if you haven’t already. Some of these HD animated wallpapers just shine like anything on the gorgeous Retina Display of iPhone 4

The instructions on installing vWallpaper on your iPhone or iPod touch are as follows. You will need to have a jailbroken iPhone to install it. Follow our step by step guide posted here to jailbreak your iPhone or iPod touch with JailbreakMe if you haven’t already. This will not work on iPad.

Step 1: Start “Cydia” on your iPhone/iPod touch.

Step 2: Touch on “Manage” tab on the bottom.

Step 3: Now touch on “Sources” as seen in the screenshot below:

Step 4: Touch on “Edit”, and then on “Add”. You should now be prompted to enter a url source as seen in the screenshot below. Type http://i.danstaface.net/deb and tap on“Add Source”.

Cydia will now automatically update your sources by following a series of automated steps.

Could Angry Birds Be Getting The Big Screen Treatment?

We all know and love Rovio‘s brilliantly addictive iPhone game, Angry Birds. I mean, it’s up there with Doodle Jump and Plants vs. Zombies – the App Store greats that have sold millions of copies. However, unlike the other two, Angry Birds might just be getting the “big screen” treatment.

No, I don’t mean 9.7 inches of screen – that’s already been done. And, besides, we’re talking bigger.

According to a recent report by TUAW, Rovio is apparently thinking about marketing Angry Birds – with one possibility being a movie or two.

We’ve seen this before on the XBOX 360 platform, with the popular Viva Pinata title (remember the free TV show and, more importantly, its theme tune?). This only served to boost interest in the game itself – as you’d expect.

I’m not sure whether Angry Birds has the potential to grow into a movie with a half-decent storyline; you’d need a very creative writer on board, as the inspiration well would be pretty dry to begin with. However, if Rovio manages to pull it off, an Angry Birds film will only serve to promote the popular game even further.

In the meantime, take a look at Angry Birds’ commercial-come-trailer (below), which could give you an idea of how a film version of the game might pan out.

The App Store By The Numbers

While it is obvious the App Store is a resounding success, it is interesting to see how it stacks up against other mobile app markets. Mobile Entertainment compiled a list of facts about the App Store and competing mobile app markets. While some may not immediately consider mobile apps to be as important as PC apps, the average computer user does not download and install 60 apps a year.

The iPhone was not the first phone to utilize mobile apps, but it was the first to garner huge success from mobile apps. Because of this, and the newness of Android, it is no surprise that Apple is well ahead of its competition. With 5 billion downloads and 225,000 apps available in the App Store, Apple is clearly dominating.

MultiFlow Brings Exposé-Like Multitasking To iOS 4 & iPad

As iOS 4 users on the iPhone 4 and 3GS can tell you, multitasking capabilities have greatly improved the entire iPhone experience. In case you’re not a fan of the current implementation however or are on a 3G, you’ll be glad to know that MultiFl0w, the exposé-like task manager for jailbroken iDevice owners is now available for iOS 4.

It was first created for 3.1.2, but after Apple released iOS4, there was still high demand for an alternative solution. Multifl0w was originally a cards-style interface similar to that seen on Palm’s WebOS, but Multifl0w 2.0 is an Exposé-like interface. It was entirely rewritten for speed, performance, reliability, and for iOS4, iPad, and iPhone 4.

And guess what? It looks better than what Apple made for iOS4! Available on Cydia for just $4.99, it works with Backgrounder and displays up to 9 apps at a time.

Apple Holding Special Event Next Wednesday

It’s official folks. Apple will be holding a special event next Wednesday, September 1st in San Francisco. Assuming they stick to the tradition, we’re expecting some new iPods as well as, hopefully, a brand new iPod touch. It’s going to be an exciting event as the rumor is that the next iPod touch is packing FaceTime, which would be pretty huge, or will it be a new Apple TV? Also, we’re still waiting for iOS 4 on the iPad.
