Sony Ericsson unveiled its new Sony Ericsson Z1010, which is a dual mode UMTS (64kbps) and GSM-GPRS (4+2) terminal.
On paper, we are dealing with a product with impressive technological characteristics: two integrated digital cameras, two displays, support for video and video conferencing. The external display, which serves for viewing the “status” of the telephone as well as the eventual calling number, is quite wide, 101 x 80 pixels of resolution with 4 tones of grey. The internal display, we haven’t said, is in colour. It is wide and luminous, and able to view up to 65,000 colours with a resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. The Sony Ericsson Z1010 is equipped with a good two digital cameras, each with their own function: the external camera, aside from taking, saving and sending VGA images, can also record short videos, while the internal camera can be used exclusively for calls in videoconferencing. The multimedia player in formats a/v MPEG 4, H.263, MP3, ACC and AMR is naturally integrated, as is support for messaging in formats SMS/EMS/MMS/MMS video and the WAP 2.0 browser.

The multimedia capacity of this terminal includes polyphonic ring tones with 24 tones, as well as support for Java technology for downloading games and applications and personalising the telephone. The Sony Ericsson Z1010 does not even lack Bluetooth, which is now practically in series on all the the terminals from this Nippo-Swedish joint venture. Bluetooth can be used for wireless connection to the PC, accessories and compatible terminals. There is also support for connecting via the IrDA port or via USB True Connector cable of 12Mbit. The memory capacity of the terminal can be easily expanded with the Sony Memory Stick Duo technology, which supplies easy management of images and/or videos and applications.

The new Z1010, Sony Ericsson’s first UMTS terminal, will be available on the market in the second half of the year at a price that has yet to be defined, even though, we are afraid that its cost will not be kept low, seeing the rich technological content that it offers.
